Business Dinner: 12th August 2010

The second annual ‘Best Things in Life' dinner held at the IVY on the 12th of August, was another huge success for Avner's Fund.

Proceeds from ticket sales and auctions in addition to the funds raised previously, brought the balance to more than one million dollars. A staggering result considering Avner's Fund has been in existence less than two years.

The event was co-hosted by both Woolworths and Coca-Cola Amatil, a move that highlights the growing support in the business community to make a difference in pancreatic cancer.

Speakers included Michael Luscombe, Warwick White, Ambassador to the Fund, Dr Norman Swan and Avner's widow, Caroline Kelly. Michael Luscombe highlighted how good things come from bad - how the loss of life has led to the establishment and success of Avner's Fund. Warwick White told the audience of his personal experience of losing a friend, colleague and mentor to the disease.

Warwick announced that Coca-Cola Amatil will continue their support by donating 10c from the sale of specially marked Deep Spring Water products. An initiative expected to raise a staggering $500,000 and will also serve the dual purpose of building awareness of pancreatic cancer in the wider community.

Dr Swan's message related progress in research to progress in business, something the business leaders in the audience could relate to year-by-year improvements that in ten years could achieve significant benefits to patients. Caroline spoke of her experiences with the disease and the future plans for the fund.

A cheque for $1,000,000 was presented to Professor John Zalcberg OAM, Chairman of the GI CANCER Institute enabling the trial to begin.

On behalf of Avner's Fund, Caroline recognised the contribution of all who have attended and supported the fund along its journey to reaching such a momentous milestone. Coca-Cola Amatil were singled out for their significant contribution to the Fund and a photo taken by Avner was presented to Terry Davis and Warwick White as a token of appreciation for their support.

Thank you to all who attended and supported the event and to all those who have helped us reach $1,000,000. You have made a difference.
