Palm Beach turns purple for Walk!
| 18 October 2009
Palm Beach was awash with the colour purple on Sunday when more than 230 walkers turned out for the inaugural 'Put your foot down' Walk for the Avner Nahmani Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund.
The Hon. Bronwyn Bishop officially started the keen participants off on the 4 kilometre walk along the beach culminating in a return to the staging area for a BBQ and other refreshments. Walkers responded to the request to dress in purple, the international colour of pancreatic cancer, making a colourful procession as they streamed along the beach in a bright array of clothes and accessories.
Woolworths Limited CEO, Michael Luscombe officiated at the event congratulating the walkers for their enthusiasm and generosity in making the first walk a huge success for the Fund, and for their commitment to raising awareness of pancreatic cancer in the wider public forum. Mr Luscombe presented the prize for the highest individual fund-raiser - presented to to Aashish Gholkar and the prize for the highest team fund raiser - presented to 'Who left the dogs out!!'.
Patron of the Fund, Roger Corbett judged the most creatively dressed walkers with the prize going to Sharon McLean and Jannah Meredith who both made an outstanding effort wearing matching purple outfits.
The location for the walk was a tribute to Avner's love of the Northern Beaches and particularly the time he spent walking along Palm Beach and surrounding areas after his diagnosis, when the sights and sounds of the outdoors took on new significance in Avner's life.
We look forward to the 'Put your foot down' Walk becoming an annual calendar event.
